What the devil are keywords and how do you use them? That is exactly the question I am asking myself. As a newbie in the advertising internet marketing arena, I have a thousand questions and keywords is just one of the countless subjects to tackle first.
From my brief research on Keywords, keywords are basically words that people (like you and me) type into a web browser to search the world wide web looking for whatever thing or gadget in need. They’re search words. Sounds like a simple enough concept, but as a brand new fish in the sea here it’s not as easy as it appears.
It seems, that the more general the keyword the greater the “hits” (what the search will return). You’ll get millions of returns on a very general search. So this tells me that it’s probably not a good idea to use very general/broad keywords on my website. However, if you are selling just one or a few things or items, then your keyword job is much easier (because you have a limited number of choices the exactly relate to what it is you are offering or selling).
My website is based on many products and services, so my keyword strategy needs to be more critical (or precise is a better term). I have many different and diverse categories and products/services that must be analyzed and defined in order to extract the keywords that will work.
To quickly summarize, Keywords are simply “search words or phrases” that you type into a web browser’s search box. The more general the keyword(s) the greater hits that will be returned. (they may or may not be a good thing) The goal is the refine your keywords to be as specific to the content on your pages as possible. (and to also differentiate yourself from the others)
So this is where I currently stand regarding my website…trying to figure out which keywords will be good choices. The next two tasks will be getting listed in the search engines, and then optimizing my website for the searches. [if you’re not on the first page you’re never get seen]
